Simply read Kimball & Ross

I enjoy reading about transcendent truths. I believe one of them is the methodology of Ralph Kimball & Margy Ross on Dimensional Modeling.

Several weeks ago, I had a blast meeting Nuric Ugarte (who is a Major League Power BI consultant, no kidding) and we were discussing with my good friend José Rafael Escalante, the sad reality of inheriting the data model of another individual who doesn’t follow good practices, for example: setting Bi-directional Relationships ALL over the place on the model. Yikes! The discussion led me to another meme…

I audit more bad data models than good ones, hence, I keep having a job as a consultant that helps me bring the food to the table for my family.

Two favors:

1. Read Ralph Kimballs & Margy Ross’ book: The Definite Guide of Dimensional Modelling.  (Tip: ignore about the wording: Warehouse Toolkit)

2. Be nice with your data models in Power BI.

Finally, here’s the GOAT: Marco Russo‘s take on this topic (minute 56:20) in an amazing interview with Kasper de Jonge:

That’s it for today, just a good reminder to myself: Re-read Kimball & Ross. See you tomorrow!
